MEXICO CITY — While the world awaits findings from new AIDS prevention trials, millions of people are becoming infected because governments are overlooking studies showing that behavior modification works, AIDS experts said Tuesday.Among the behavior modifications the experts cited: promoting safer sex through delayed intercourse and the use of condoms, decreasing drug abuse, providing access to needle exchange programs and promoting male circumcision.ut none of the measures alone offer a simple solution to preventing infection with H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS, the experts said in a number of reports and news conferences at the 17th International AIDS Conference here. |

AIDS Experts Push for More Focus in Vaccine Research |

Experts attending the International AIDS conference in Mexico City say vaccine researchers should concentrate on smaller, more focused trials and drop any vaccines that do not show promise. Officials from the non-profit International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, known as IAVI, made the comment Tuesday as the group released proposals on vaccine research and development. Dr, Seth Berkley, President of International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, The group's president, Dr. Seth Berkley, said developing an AIDS vaccine may take more time and innovation that originally thought, but he said scientists are confident that science will prevail. He said it is not unexpected for a vaccine to take decades to develop. |

AIDS conference begins in Mexico City |

An international AIDS/HIV conference has begun in Mexico City. The six-day summit is being attended by thousands of scientists, government officials, aid workers and dignitaries, including former President Bill Clinton. Mr Clinton warned there was "no silver bullet" to rid the world of the disease
Research shows a light reduction in the number of global HIV infections, but some African countries are still showing an increase. The conference in Mexico City is intended to raise funds for anti-AIDS programmes, as well as to discuss prevention methods and the limited access to retroviral drugs in developing countries.
