AAN (AIDS ALLIANCE NEPAL) is a national community based non-profitorganization representing people living with HIV/AIDS through a network of individuals and groups who provide services to people living withHIV/AIDS (PLWHA). AAN was formed in March 2005 in response to an emerging need for PLWHA (especially women and children living with HIV) to be given a voice.

STD,HIV/AIDS Awareness Education Workshop in the Village

On May/June,2008, Aids Alliance Nepal (AAN) conducted four STD,HIV / AIDS Awareness Education Workshops in the Village Communities of Thankot, 15 kilometres far fromKathmandu. Thankot Mahila Jagaran ,a network of women's Cooperative Saving and Credit  Association has four hundred  members in it.In 2007,AAN reached there for awareness education training and conducted a day workshop with the homemakers of the network.AAN talked to them, discussed about sexsually transmitted diseases, HIV and AIDS,its modes of transmissions, prevention and safety measures and human rights of PLWHA.They showed very keen interest on the issues.AAN found them very open minded.Extending full  cooperation,they demanded to organise the awareness trainings for  all the members.
 
AAN incorporated 100 females in its activities for the year 2008. Workshops were conducted in May and June. The newly married young women, housewives and even some grandmas attended the training.They all engaged in the whole days' activities with enthusiasm.They took part both in the group and open floor discussion.The participants expressed their views:

1. "We knew a lot about Drugs and HIV / AIDS from the training.And we try to save ourselves and our family.Our group will impart  knowledge to  the community on this matter.Try to make  the training  more effective by using teaching materials and equipments(High-tech machine).

2."The training has built our capacity so that we can circulate the knowledge to the society.Besides theoretical knowledge, audio-visual clips should be used because it can help the participants understamd the issues more easily."

 3. "It is necessary to go to the remote areas.The residents should be aware of HIV?AIDS and STDs.The training should get continuety."

5. "The village homemakers (female members) feel difficulties to go outside the village.Therefore, AAN should go to the rural houses and conduct awareness tarinings".

AAN constituated a volunteer group 3-5 women from each training groups.The volunteers will be provided basic trainings on STD,HIV and AIDS.The group will help AAN in monitoring and evaluation procedures.It will act as a bridge between the community and AAN.
